Before 2020, online hypnotherapy was relatively uncommon. Most therapists worked face-to-face, and many were sceptical about whether hypnosis could work effectively through a screen. Then the pandemic forced a rapid shift to remote delivery, and something interesting happened: it worked. Research conducted during and after the lockdowns confirmed what some practitioners had already suspected, that online hypnotherapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person treatment for the majority of conditions.

Today, online sessions are a permanent part of the therapeutic landscape, and for good reason. They remove barriers of geography and travel, offer greater flexibility, and many clients actually prefer them.

Does It Actually Work Online?

The short answer is yes. Studies published since 2020 have examined online delivery of hypnotherapy for anxiety, pain management, insomnia and habit change, and the results are consistently encouraging. Outcomes are comparable to face-to-face treatment across most measures.

This makes sense when you consider what hypnotherapy actually involves. The therapist guides you into a focused, relaxed state using their voice. They don't need to touch you, and you don't need to be in a clinical setting. What matters is that you can hear the therapist clearly, that you feel safe and comfortable, and that you can focus without interruption. All of these conditions can be met just as well at home as in a therapy room.

How an Online Session Differs

The structure of an online session is very similar to an in-person one. You'll begin with a conversation (the "talking" part of the session), followed by a period of guided hypnosis. The main differences are practical:

  • Setup: You'll need a quiet, private room where you won't be disturbed. A comfortable chair or sofa is ideal. Sit rather than lie down, as this keeps you visible on camera and makes it easier for the therapist to gauge your responses
  • Technology: Sessions typically take place via Zoom, Teams or a similar platform. A stable internet connection is important, as dropped connections are disruptive. Wired connections are more reliable than Wi-Fi if you have the option
  • Headphones: These are strongly recommended. They ensure the therapist's voice is clear and immersive, and they help block out household noise that might otherwise break your concentration
  • Camera: You'll usually keep your camera on for the conversational part of the session. During hypnosis, your eyes will be closed anyway, but the therapist can still observe your breathing, posture and facial expressions to gauge your level of trance

Platforms Used

Most hypnotherapists use Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Both offer stable connections, screen sharing (useful for any visual aids) and end-to-end encryption for privacy. You'll receive a link before each session. Some therapists use dedicated healthcare video platforms with additional security features, though this isn't essential for most purposes.

Advantages of Online Hypnotherapy

  • Access from anywhere. You can work with a therapist regardless of where either of you is located. This is particularly valuable if you live in a rural area or if you want to work with a specific therapist who isn't local
  • No travel time. No commute, no parking, no arriving flustered. You can finish a session and be immediately in your own space, which many people find helps the relaxation benefits last longer
  • Comfort of home. Some people feel more relaxed in their own environment than in an unfamiliar therapy room. Being already comfortable can make it easier to enter a hypnotic state
  • Flexibility. Online sessions are often easier to fit into a busy schedule. Lunchtime appointments, early morning or evening sessions become more feasible when travel is removed from the equation
  • Continuity. If you travel for work or move house, your treatment can continue without interruption

Disadvantages to Consider

  • Technical issues. Internet dropouts, audio lag or software glitches can disrupt the flow of a session. Having a backup plan (switching to phone call, for instance) helps
  • Home distractions. Children, pets, doorbells, delivery drivers. You need to be confident you can have uninterrupted time. Letting household members know you're in a session, and putting your phone on silent, helps
  • Screen fatigue. If you spend all day on video calls for work, adding another screen session may feel unappealing. Some people find phone-only sessions (audio without video) a good compromise for the hypnosis portion
  • Not ideal for everyone. Some people simply prefer face-to-face interaction. If being in a room with the therapist helps you feel safer and more connected, that's a valid preference

Who It Suits Best

Online hypnotherapy is particularly well suited to people who live far from their preferred therapist, have mobility issues, are time-constrained by work or caring responsibilities, or feel more comfortable receiving treatment at home. It works well for anxiety, stress, phobias, habit change, confidence building and most other conditions commonly treated with hypnotherapy.

For conditions where the therapist needs to observe subtle physical responses closely (some pain management work, for example), in-person sessions may offer a slight advantage. If you're unsure, this is something to discuss during an initial consultation.

How to Prepare for Your First Online Session

  • Test your technology beforehand. Make sure your camera, microphone and internet are working
  • Choose a quiet room and let others in your household know not to disturb you
  • Have a glass of water nearby
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Use headphones
  • Close unnecessary tabs and applications on your device to avoid notifications
  • Give yourself five minutes before the session to settle and five minutes afterwards to reflect
