What actually happens during a hypnotherapy session?

A typical session lasts around 60 minutes. We begin with a conversation about how you've been feeling and any progress since your last session. Then you'll sit comfortably in a reclining chair while I guide you into a state of focused relaxation. You'll remain fully aware throughout — it feels similar to that pleasant drowsy state just before sleep. While you're in this relaxed state, I'll use therapeutic suggestions and techniques specific to your treatment plan. Afterwards, you'll feel refreshed and alert.

Is hypnotherapy the same as stage hypnosis?

No, and this is one of the biggest misconceptions. Stage hypnosis is entertainment — performers select willing volunteers who want to participate in a show. Clinical hypnotherapy is a therapeutic tool used by trained professionals to help with genuine psychological and behavioural issues. You won't be made to cluck like a chicken or do anything embarrassing. You remain in control at all times.

Can I be hypnotised against my will?

No. Hypnosis requires your cooperation and willingness. You cannot be hypnotised against your will, and you cannot be made to do anything that goes against your moral values or that you don't want to do. If at any point during a session you felt uncomfortable, you could simply open your eyes and stop.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends entirely on the issue. Smoking cessation is typically a single session. Phobias usually require 2 to 4 sessions. Anxiety, confidence and weight management typically need 4 to 6 sessions. We'll discuss a realistic treatment plan during your initial consultation, and I'll always be honest about what I think is achievable.

Is hypnotherapy scientifically proven?

There is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting hypnotherapy for various conditions. The NHS recognises hypnotherapy as a complementary therapy, and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has acknowledged its use for irritable bowel syndrome. Research published in peer-reviewed journals has demonstrated its effectiveness for anxiety, pain management, smoking cessation and other conditions.

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree. It's a natural state that we all enter regularly — when absorbed in a good book, driving on autopilot, or daydreaming. Some people are more naturally responsive than others, but with willingness and a good therapeutic relationship, the vast majority of clients achieve a useful level of hypnotic relaxation.

Will I lose control during hypnosis?

No. This is probably the most common concern people have, and it's completely understandable given how hypnosis is portrayed in films and television. In reality, you remain aware of everything that's happening. You can hear everything I say, you can open your eyes at any time, and you cannot be made to reveal secrets or do anything you don't want to do.

How much does hypnotherapy cost?

An initial consultation session is £80, and subsequent sessions are £70 each. Smoking cessation is a single extended session at £175. I also offer a package of four sessions for £250, which represents a saving of £30. Full details are on the fees page.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. I offer sessions via Zoom for clients who prefer to work from home or who live outside the Chelmsford area. Online hypnotherapy has been shown to be just as effective as face-to-face sessions for most conditions. You'll need a quiet room, a stable internet connection and a laptop or tablet.

What qualifications should a hypnotherapist have?

Look for a practitioner who holds the HPD (Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma) or equivalent, and who is registered with the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council). The CNHC is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, which provides an additional layer of accountability. Membership of a professional body such as the NCH is also a good sign.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for children?

Yes, hypnotherapy can be very effective for children and young people, typically from around age 7 upwards. Children are often excellent hypnotic subjects because they have vivid imaginations. I work with children for issues such as anxiety, phobias, bedwetting, nail biting and exam nerves. A parent or guardian must be present for sessions with anyone under 16.

Are there any side effects?

Hypnotherapy is generally very safe with no significant side effects. Some people feel slightly drowsy immediately after a session, similar to waking from a pleasant nap. This passes within a few minutes. Occasionally, as emotional issues are addressed, clients may experience some temporary heightened emotions. This is a normal part of the therapeutic process.

Can hypnotherapy help with medical conditions?

Hypnotherapy can complement medical treatment for various conditions, including IBS, chronic pain, migraine, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and preparation for surgery or dental procedures. It should not replace medical treatment, and I always recommend consulting your GP first. I'm happy to work alongside your medical team.

How do I know if hypnotherapy is right for me?

The best way to find out is to book a free telephone consultation. We'll have an honest conversation about your situation, and I'll tell you whether I think hypnotherapy could help. There's no pressure and no obligation. If I don't think hypnotherapy is the right approach for you, I'll say so and suggest alternatives where I can.
